Telkomsel deployed 5,900 4G LTE base stations across Indonesia in Q4, report says

TelecomLead writes that Telekomunikasi Selular (Telkomsel) installed and commissioned around 5,900 4G LTE base transceiver stations (BTS) in Q4 2018 to bolster mobile internet coverage across Indonesia, helping boost the overall total to 189,100 BTS on-air by the year end. Telkomsel, controlled by fixed line operator Telkom Indonesia, added that at the same date some 73% of all BTS were dedicated for 3G/4G, although it stopped short of providing a full-year CAPEX figure for FY18. In addition, the cellco noted that having carried out an FDD Massive MIMO demonstration in association with Huawei in 2017, which delivered a five-fold increase in capacity when compared with FDD LTE 2×2 MIMO. Telkomsel had around 20 million 4G subscribers at the start of 2019.

Further, Telekomsel confirmed that it had exhibited ‘several use cases of its 5G technology application during the Asian Games 2018, having received a permit from the Ministry of Communications and Information Technology (MICT) to install its trial 5G network operating at 28GHz. It is yet to confirm any dates vis-a-vis a planned commercial launch of 5G services.
