MEO stops marketing copper voice services

13 Feb 2019

PT Portugal (MEO), the full-service telecoms operator backed by Altice Europe, has stopped marketing fixed voice services over its copper network to new customers, Jornal de Negocios reports. A company spokesperson informed the business daily that the decision is ‘non-regulatory’ and has been motivated by ‘economic and technological reasons’. The telco’s goal is to accelerate the migration of its user base to its expanding fibre-optic networks. Existing copper users will be unaffected in the short-term.

TeleGeography notes that PT Portugal started decommissioning its copper network in 2017, and previously disclosed tentative plans to replace its legacy infrastructure with fibre-to-the-home (FTTH) technology by 2020.
