The Office of the Communications Authority (OFCA) in Hong Kong has published its latest three-year spectrum release plan covering the period 2019-21. The plan confirms OFCA’s previously announced proposals to auction more than 4,000MHz of 5G-capable frequencies in the 3.3GHz, 3.6GHz, 4.9GHz and 24GHz-28GHz ranges during 2019. Spectrum sales are scheduled to begin in April.
The regulator also says it will offer up to 160MHz of spectrum in the 600MHz-800MHz range in 2020, to be used for indoor mobile services. A consultation process to discuss the terms of this auction is due to be held this year. TeleGeography’s GlobalComms Database notes that Hong Kong’s mobile sector is home to four network operators: HKT/CSL, Hutchison 3, China Mobile HK (CMHK) and SmarTone.
