Telekom Deutschland (TD), the domestic operating unit of Deutsche Telekom (DT), has put into operation the first group of 5G antennas in Darmstadt, following field tests in Berlin and the Port of Hamburg. The aims of the latest field tests include gathering experience with installation and operation of systems for the new technology. In addition, a range of 5G applications and devices will be trialled. For the project, Telekom is cooperating with the City of Darmstadt and with its technology partner Ericsson.
The Darmstadt 5G test network will be fully in place by spring and will comprise 18 antennas at six different sites. The test field array will conform to the 5G New Radio (5G NR) standard and the antennas will operate on the basis of a 3.7GHz field test spectrum licence.
