Turkcell and Affirmed complete virtualised network deployment

6 Feb 2019

Turkish mobile market leader Turkcell and US-based Affirmed Networks have announced the completion of their virtualised mobile network transformation project. Turkcell selected Affirmed as its partner in February 2018, and the virtualised network infrastructure now supports Turkcell’s entire mobile user base (32.4 million subscribers plus 2.5 million M2M/IoT connections at end-September 2018) and carries over 1Tbps user traffic.

The transformation initiative was designed to streamline costs and drive revenue growth via an accelerated ability to deliver new services to market and significant CAPEX reductions required to build and operate Turkcell’s next-generation network infrastructure. Affirmed Networks provided the virtualised ‘GiLAN’ solution alongside Turkcell’s complete ‘Unified Telco Cloud’ platform utilising the Red Hat ‘OpenStack Platform’ plus a Data Optimisation solution, and today the Turkcell network supports ‘a wide variety of services including data optimisation, CGN, DPI and control plane services that include VoLTE, PCRF and AAA’, according to the partners’ joint press release. Turkcell added that its virtualised network ‘reduces both overall cost and time-to-market, greatly enhancing the ability to deploy new services, such as IMS, much sooner.’ Affirmed Networks will continue to support Turkcell in day-to-day operations of the network for the next three-to-five years.
