BSNL to work with Ciena on 5G trials

6 Feb 2019

State-backed operator Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited (BSNL) has partnered with US-based vendor Ciena to conduct field trials of 5G technology, the Economic Times reports. BSNL is currently awaiting the allocation of additional spectrum resources that will enable it to launch 4G LTE services, but is nevertheless preparing for the next generation and has begun working with several technology partners, including Nokia, Coriant and SoftBank. BSNL Chairman Anupam Shrivastava was quoted as saying of the company’s 5G plans: ‘5G is part of Digital India mission launched by our Prime Minister, and we should not be left behind in adopting newer technology and must go together with the rest of the world.’
