Rakuten acquires ‘comprehensive licence’ to deploy radio stations in Kanto, Tokai and Kinki districts

28 Jan 2019

In a press release, Japan’s Rakuten Mobile Network – set up by Rakuten Group to be the country’s fourth mobile network operator when it launches in October 2019 – has secured a comprehensive 1700MHz licence from the Kanto Bureau of the Ministry of Internal Affairs and Communications (MIC). Company president and CEO Yoshihisa Yamada confirmed last week that the firm’s 4G mobile licence allows it to operate comprehensive mobile services over multiple base transceiver stations (BTS) operating at 1700MHz in the Kanto, Tokai and Kinki districts. Going forward, Rakuten Mobile Network aims to move forward with the buildout of BTS and other network infrastructure in the aforementioned areas, while continuing efforts to acquire radio station licences for other regions, ahead of the planned October 2019 launch.
