Singtel, Ericsson to open ‘5G Garage’ test facility

18 Jan 2019

Singapore Telecommunications Limited (Singtel) and Swedish equipment manufacturer Ericsson have revealed plans to open a 5G test-bed facility at Singapore Polytechnic which they say will be used to further the adoption of the next generation technology by enterprise and business. In a joint press release, the three parties said the unit – dubbed ‘5G Garage’ – marks the first of its kind in the city-state and will connect to Singtel’s pilot 5G mobile network operating at 3.5GHz – by dint of a trial spectrum permit granted by the Info-communications Media Development Authority (IMDA). 5G Garage will develop a range of useful facilities to support enterprise-based initiatives to develop and test 5G technology; co-develop products for industry; develop and deliver a wireless technology curriculum for the institute’s School of Electrical and Electronic Engineering; and nurture the 5G capabilities of employees. The move comes in the wake of the November 2018 trial carried out by Singtel and Ericsson in which they claimed to have completed a 5G data call over the former’s 5G pilot network.
