AT&T 5G network now live; commercial service starts on 21 December

AT&T Mobility has confirmed that its long-awaited 5G mobile network is now officially up and running and will be made available on a commercial basis from 21 December. Described as a ‘standards-based mobile 5G network’, the network utilises millimetre wave (mmWave) frequencies and is operational in selected parts of the following twelve cities: Atlanta, Charlotte, Dallas, Houston, Indianapolis, Jacksonville, Louisville, Oklahoma City, New Orleans, Raleigh, San Antonio and Waco. In the first half of 2019 AT&T expects to deploy mobile 5G in parts of Las Vegas, Los Angeles, Nashville, Orlando, San Diego, San Francisco and San Jose.

AT&T says that the 5G network will initially be offered to ‘select businesses and consumers’, while early adopters will have to use the recently-unveiled NETGEAR Nighthawk 5G mobile hotspot for connectivity.
