UZI Zambia Mobile aiming to launch in 1Q19

12 Dec 2018

UZI Zambia Mobile, a subsidiary of Netherlands-based Unitel International Holdings, is aiming to launch commercial operations in early 2019, according to The Southern Times. As previously reported by CommsUpdate, in March this year the company was confirmed as the winner of Zambia’s fourth mobile licence. The report noted that Unitel had initially targeted November 2018 for launch, but its plans have been delayed as the would-be operator struggles to: secure the frequencies it needs to operate, formalise its operating licence and recruit any necessary staff. Commenting on the matter, Misheck Lungu, Zambia’s permanent secretary for communications, was cited as saying: ‘UZI has indicated to us that they will start full operations in Zambia by the first quarter next year. They initially wanted to open up business in November but they instead shelved to January or February to finalise a number of formalities, including frequencies.’
