Tigo Senegal obtains 4G licence

Tigo Senegal, the country’s second largest cellco by subscribers, has obtained a 4G LTE licence from the Authority of Regulation of Telecommunications and Post (ARTP). According to Jeune Afrique, Tigo paid a total of XOF27 billion (USD46.7 million) for its 4G concession. Due to changes in the ownership of Tigo Senegal earlier this year, the company had to apply for a new LTE licence and previous owner Millicom International Cellular (MIC) boycotted the permit as it deemed the asking price too high. Now that Tigo has obtained its 4G licence, the cellco hopes to make ground on leading mobile operator Orange, which introduced 4G services to its Senegalese customers in July 2016.
