NTT DOCOMO and Metawave demo 5G at 28GHz using ‘world’s first meta-structure technology’

Japanese mobile operator NTT DOCOMO, working in partnership with Metawave Corp, has announced the successful demonstration of 5G mobile technology using the 28GHz band in what it claims is ‘the world’s first meta-structure reflect-array technology’. The trial took place in Koto-ku, Tokyo on 29 November 2018 and achieved data transmission speeds of 560Mbps with Metawave’s meta-structures reflect-array in place, compared to 60Mbps with no reflector. The press release note that ‘meta-structures are an artificial medium with optical characteristics developed by arranging structures that are sufficiently small with respect to wavelength in the form of an array.’
