Spanish telecoms giant Telefonica has teamed up with Chinese vendor Huawei to stage a 5G video call between Malaga and London. The telco notes that the demonstration utilised 5G-capable equipment based on 3GPP standards. Huawei provided Telefonica with a 5G base station with Massive MIMO 64T64R-equipped antenna; a 5G non-standalone (NSA) core with virtualised infrastructure; a 5G-capable wireless router; and the Huawei Mate20 device which transmitted the video call.
Telefonica notes that the test cemented Malaga’s place as the third location to be included in its ‘5G Technological Cities’ project, alongside Segovia and Talavera de la Reina. Last week, Telefonica and Nokia – in collaboration with the University of Valladolid and the city of Segovia – demonstrated a new use case based on 5G technology. That demo involved the remote monitoring of an operator’s industrial assembly work using an augmented reality application on a tablet.
