Mobilis tests 5G in Oran with Huawei

Algerie Telecom Mobile (Mobilis) has tested gigabit-capable mobile technology in Oran, a port city in north-western Algeria, as part of the ‘Smart Algeria’ forum. The trial, which was carried out in conjunction with Chinese vendor Huawei, generated downlink data transmission speeds of up to 1.18Gbps, with local and international press variously reporting the technology used as either ‘4.5G’ or ‘5G’. Samir Bouzekri, director of the cellco’s technical division, noted that gigabit mobile technology testing will not be restricted to Oran, adding that Mobilis is working with Ericsson and ZTE to stage similar trials in other parts of the country. The cellco indicates that it aims to be in a position to support the launch of 5G network technology in 2020.
