Swisscom tests 5G devices, adds five new test sites

12 Nov 2018

State-owned full-service provider Swisscom has connected a smartphone device and hotspot to its live 5G test network, and has expanded the number of 5G test locations to six with Lucerne, Zurich, Bern, Lausanne and Geneva joining its initial site in Burgdorf. The operator announced that it has connected to its test system a smartphone prototype equipped with a Qualcomm 5G midband modem and a Wistron NeWeb Corporation (WNC) hotspot, also featuring the same Qualcomm chipset. Swisscom is planning to roll out 5G to 60 cities and communities across Switzerland by the end of 2019, noting that although 5G handsets are not expected to become available until around summer 2019, ‘initial industrial applications have been developed that reveal the potential of 5G’.

Qualcomm president Cristiano Amon commented on the tests: ‘This is the first 5G NR [New Radio] over-the-air connection worldwide between devices and a live operator network using 3.5GHz spectrum, marking an important milestone for the mobile industry in Europe to help enable [vendors] and operators to deliver 5G networks and devices in the first half of 2019.’
