23 Oct 2018

Kenyan telecoms companies are raising the cost of some of their services after changes to taxes were passed through the Finance Act 2018. The Excise Duty applicable on voice, SMS and data services was hiked from 10% to 15%, which is in addition to the existing VAT of 16% applicable to mobile services. After Safaricom announced it was increasing its prices as of 18 October, cellcos Airtel and Telkom Kenya, and fixed operator Zuku, have all revealed that they are following suit from 23 October.
