GMA News cites the acting secretary of the Department of Information and Communications Technology, Eliseo Rio Jr., as saying that the winner of the third telco slot may be in a position to start signing up its own subscribers by June 2019. Speaking today (22 October), Rio confirmed that DICT will be carrying out the bidding process on 7 November under the current schedule which according to him gives ’six months or so [for] the third telco to roll out their infrastructure,’ meaning that by the middle of next year, ‘they get subscribers’.
So far, five local companies and at least seven foreign ones have expressed an interest in participating in the process to select the third telco – the New Major Player (NMP). DICT is aiming to unveil the name of the NMP before the end of the year.
