Elisa close to concluding pre-5G upgrade work in Jyvaskyla

10 Oct 2018

Finnish mobile network operator (MNO) Elisa has confirmed that it is in the closing stages of upgrading its infrastructure in the city of Jyvaskyla, as part of its efforts to enhance its network with 5G capabilities ahead of a commercial launch next year. Having begun work on replacing its base stations in the aforementioned city with upgraded technology in May 2018, the cellco has said it expects work to be concluded by mid-November.

As noted in TeleGeography’s GlobalComms Database, in September 2017 Elisa unveiled plans to begin building a ‘5G-ready’ network covering Tampere and its surrounding areas. In February 2018 it then revealed plans to upgrade its infrastructure in the Turku region by replacing existing base station hardware, before confirming a month later that work in Tampere had been completed. As per its latest press release, meanwhile, Elisa indicated that work on upgrading its infrastructure in both Turku and Helsinki has also now been completed.
