Rakuten Mobile Network Inc. has teamed up with Nokia to successfully conduct over-the-air 5G trials using the Nokia AirScale base station and the Intel 5G Mobile Trial Platform. The trials, which utilised the 28GHz band, were carried out in a shielded room at the Nokia Kawasaki Technology Centre located in Kanagawa Prefecture. The two companies verified a number of 5G applications including 4K video and 3D 360-degree VR live streaming.
As previously reported by CommsUpdate, Rakuten Mobile Network received approval for its 1700MHz Special Base Station Deployment Plan in April 2018 and aims to launch its mobile network in October 2019.
TeleGeography notes that e-commerce giant Rakuten is already active within the Japanese wireless market via its MVNO unit, Rakuten Mobile, which launched in November 2014, over the NTT DOCOMO network. The virtual operator passed the 1.5 million subscriber milestone in January 2018.
