Airtel Malawi has revealed that it has now disconnected around one million inactive customers, following the conclusion of the country’s SIM registration campaign, reports Malawi24. Earlier this week the Malawi Communications Regulatory Authority (MACRA) warned the Bharti Airtel-owned cellco that it could face the suspension of its operating licence if it failed to disconnect unregistered SIMs. In a statement, Airtel Malawi’s Managing Director Charles Kamoto said it failed to complete deactivation of SIM cards by the 1 October deadline due to technical reasons, but the process was finalised on Wednesday. ‘Airtel has a stringent quality control validation process for customer registration which is essential to satisfy compliance and the team accelerated the process to ensure completion of the initiative,’ Kamoto added. Airtel’s competitor Telekom Networks Malawi (TNM) registered 75% of its customers by the deadline and has deactivated any remaining SIMs.
