Vectra-Multimedia deal prompts concern at regulator

26 Sep 2018

Poland’s Office of Competition & Consumer Protection (Urzad Ochrony Konkurencji i Konsumentow, UOKiK) has raised concerns over the potential impact on competition from the proposed merger of cablecos Vectra and Multimedia. The watchdog said that the two firms compete in the pay-TV market in 39 cities and in the broadband internet sector in 45 cities, and that this could lead to a ‘restriction of competition’ in some areas. It has therefore launched a second stage of investigations into the deal, which would combine Poland’s second and third largest cable networks.

In March this year, larger rival UPC was forced to call off its own planned merger with Multimedia when it became clear it would not be able to satisfy UOKiK’s competition fears.
