Telefonica Deutschland and Samsung Electronics have agreed to run fixed-wireless access (FWA) trials with up to 20 households in Hamburg. The aim of the trials, which will begin in November and take place over a period of three months, is to show that households and businesses can be supplied with high-quality gigabit connections for an optimal customer experience without the need for laying of fibre-optic cables. Samsung will support the set-up of the trial with a complete end-to-end millimetre wave (26GHz) solution. The technology consists of a virtual core and a 5G radio access unit, as well as 5G outdoor-units and indoor routers for the customers.
‘For the first time, Telefonica Deutschland and Samsung are working hand-in-hand in Germany on the introduction of 5G in connection with FWA,’ said Cayetano Carbajo Martin, CTO of Telefonica Deutschland, adding: ‘At Telefonica Deutschland, we are confident that this trial will not only demonstrate the technical feasibility of FWA in Germany, but will also provide a better network experience with regard to future technologies.’
