Vietnamese military-backed telecoms group Viettel has reignited speculation linking it to an approach for an operating concession in the Dominican Republic. The telco – which has made no secret of its desire to enter the market in recent years – has dispatched executive director Nguyen Than Xuan to the Caribbean nation to discuss investment opportunities with Miguel Mejia, the Minister for Regional Integration Policies, and a number of other political figures.
It is unclear as to whether Viettel would prefer to pursue a greenfield rollout strategy or acquire an existing player. Altice Dominicana was put up for sale by Altice Group (now Altice Europe) back in November 2017 but has yet to attract a confirmed bidder.
TeleGeography notes that Viettel Group’s investment in Latin America and the Caribbean is currently limited to operations in Haiti (Natcom) and Peru (Bitel).
