Swisscom and Ericsson complete 5G call

6 Sep 2018

Swedish vendor Ericsson and state-backed telco Swisscom have announced that they have completed what they claim to be Europe’s first end-to-end multivendor 5G Non-Standalone (NSA) data call on the 3500MHz band. The call was made in the city of Burgdorf over Swisscom’s network and using the equipment supplied by Ericsson. Commenting on the test, Ericssons’s Executive VP and Head of Business Area Networks, Fredrik Jejdling was quoted as saying: ‘We’ve raised the bar on our strategic partnership with Swisscom with these new milestones. By achieving an end-to-end data call on the 3.5GHz band and kick-starting the 5G network rollout, we are helping Swisscom bring 5G services quicker to its customers. Access to new technologies will prepare industries for 5G use cases that will benefit the whole of Switzerland.’ As noted by TeleGeography’s GlobalComms Database, Swisscom is planning to make 5G services available in selected locations by the end of the year.
