Tele2 Russia abolishes intra-network roaming charges

28 Aug 2018

Tele 2 Russia confirmed on 27 August that it has abolished all remaining ‘intra-network roaming’ charges, thus complying with the Federal Antimonopoly Service (FAS) directive to eliminate such charges by 31 August. Intra-network roaming is the practice whereby cellcos charge their users additional fees for mobile services when travelling to Russian regions outside their home region, despite remaining within on-net coverage.

As previously reported by TeleGeography’s CommsUpdate, in March 2018 the FAS initiated cases against the country’s ‘big three’ mobile operators, namely Beeline, MegaFon and Mobile TeleSystems (MTS), for failing to standardise their tariffs by the stipulated 31 January deadline. Tele2 was given until end-May to comply, although a three-month extension was later granted.
