The government of Mozambique says the restructuring of state-backed telcos Telecomunicacoes de Mocambique (TDM) and mCel is ‘already taking place’, with the two firms due to submit an official merger proposal by the end of this year. Transport and Communications Minister Carlos Mesquita is quoted by O Pais as saying that ‘the proposal is almost complete’. He adds that TDM and mCel now have a single board of directors, while retail stores have been ‘technologically prepared to serve the activities of the two companies’.
Plans for the consolidation were first announced in 2016, with a view to helping to cut costs and also enabling the enlarged operator to market a range of converged fixed-mobile products.
