Claro, TIM Brasil ink 3G roaming pact

14 Aug 2018

Claro Brasil and TIM Brasil – the country’s second- and third-largest mobile operators, respectively – have reportedly inked a 3G roaming agreement covering around 700 municipalities. According to TeleSintese, the agreement means that each operator will be allowed to compete in markets solely served by its rival for the first time. The markets in question are each understood to be home to less than 30,000 people.

TeleGeography notes that the geographic restrictions date back to December 2007, when the National Telecommunications Agency (Agencia Nacional de Telecomunicacoes, Anatel) auctioned off 3G-suitable spectrum, and judged that competition in the smaller markets was not economically justified at that point in time.
