China Mobile Hong Kong tests ‘end-to-end 5G’

13 Aug 2018

China Mobile Hong Kong (CMHK) has claimed to be the first operator in Hong Kong to test an end-to-end 5G network using Customer Premises Equipment (CPE) enabling in-home high speed Wi-Fi internet access to end-users. The company’s press release highlighted that when 5G spectrum is officially released in Hong Kong, the CMHK 5G network ‘will be ready to provide full services to users’, adding that whilst 5G compatible smartphones will not be widely available until the second half of 2019, early 5G services will be based on Wi-Fi connectivity via CPE. CMHK also said it will build a 28GHz 5G network in selected locations by year-end. Lab test results from CMHK have shown 14Gbps data speeds using 28GHz and 800MHz spectrum with 4×4 MIMO technology.
