Cross-network mobile money transfers coming to Rwanda

24 Jul 2018

Rwanda’s mobile network operators (MNOs) – MTN, Airtel and Tigo – have agreed to allow cross-network transfers on their respective mobile money services. Airtel and Tigo, which are both now owned by Bharti Airtel of India but continue to operate as separate entities, have already implemented transfers between their users, but MTN has so far held out from joining them. The East African reports that the trio are currently seeking regulatory approval for the move, which it is hoped will reduce transaction costs and widen financial inclusion. According to TeleGeography’s GlobalComms Database, there were 9.05 million mobile subscribers in Rwanda at the end of March 2018.
