Australia’s Telstra has announced the introduction of LTE-Broadcast (LTE-B) technology across its mobile network on a nationwide basis. In a press release, the operator said that customers using Samsung Galaxy S8 and Galaxy S9 devices could now benefit from more reliable HD streaming when using the AFL Live Official app. Marking the deployment, Telstra said it had carried out a live demonstration in Sydney, with more than 100 Samsung Galaxy S8 and Galaxy S9 handsets showing simultaneous HD content from the AFL Live Official app using LTE-B. At the same time, a second batch of devices delivered the same content by conventional unicast to demonstrate ‘how normal networks can be saturated with demand leading to lower quality and stalling of content’. Telstra partnered with Ericsson and Samsung on the LTE-B rollout, while noting that it had received further support from Expway in enabling the middleware in the AFL Live Official app.
While Telstra’s LTE-B offering is currently exclusive to the AFL Live Official app on the aforementioned Samsung devices, looking ahead the operator has said more devices and applications will be added ‘over the coming months’.
