Telkomsel (Telekomunikasi Selular), 65%-owned by Indonesia’s government-backed fixed line operator Telkom with the remainder held by Singtel Group, has confirmed plans to test 5G technology at the Asian Games 2018. ‘Yes, Telkomsel will build a ‘5G Experience Center’ at the Asian Games 2018 and has submitted a proposal to [the telecoms regulator] KemKominfo on the frequencies it hopes to use, the location of the tests and the issuance of a content use permit,’ Secretary of Ministry of Youth and Sports Gatot S Dewa Broto told local news agency IndoTelko. The secretary revealed that one feature being tested is mobile broadcast services at the games, some of which will be fed live to shuttle bus services there. Previously, Indonesia’s Minister of Communications and Informatics Rudiantara claimed that all IT systems needed for the Asian Games 2018 were in place, after reviewing the readiness of a number of venues.
