Jio announces plans for FTTH launch

5 Jul 2018

Reliance Jio Infocomm (Jio) has announced that it will stage a full commercial launch of its fibre-to-the-home (FTTH) ‘JioGigaFiber’ service across 1,100 towns and cities simultaneously. The disruptive operator made the announcement at its annual generating meeting, during which it also revealed that it will launch a new LTE-compatible feature phone, Jio Phone 2, in mid-August. The device will be available for INR2,999 (USD44), although the operator will also allow customers to trade in their current device for the Jio Phone 2 for INR501.

As noted by TeleGeography’s GlobalComms Database, reports emerged in late 2016 that Jio had begun trialling FTTH services in several major cities, whist the company officially entered the trial phase of its rollout in May 2017, when ‘JioFiber’ was made available to customers in selected areas of Mumbai, Delhi, Ahmedabad, Jamnagar, Surat and Vadodara at a discounted rate.
