Hong Kong cellco Hutchison 3 says it is planning to deploy a cloud-based core network by early next year as part of its preparations for future 5G services. The South China Morning Post quotes Cliff Woo Chiu-man – chief executive of 3’s parent company Hutchison Telecom – as saying: ‘With a fully cloudified core network, which we now target to complete by the first quarter of 2019, our evolution into 5G network services will be a much smoother and straightforward process.’ Equipment for the rollout is being provided by Huawei. 3 Hong Kong has been conducting trials of 5G technology in the 3.5GHz, 26GHz and 28GHz spectrum bands.
