Telekom to increase base station total to 36,000 by 2021

25 Jun 2018

Telekom Deutschland, the domestic fixed and mobile operating unit of Deutsche Telekom (DT), plans to increase its total number of base stations in Germany from 27,000 in 2017 to 36,000 in 2021. The firm has recently rolled out 300 new base stations, enabling 163,000 additional customers to access Telekom’s LTE network. 4G coverage has been increased to 94.4% of the population and this is set to rise to 98% by 2019.

‘Focusing solely on fixed network expansion when it comes to the gigabit society is a short-sighted approach,’ said Walter Goldenits, CTO at Telekom Deutschland, adding: ‘With respect to 5G we cannot afford to ease up with mobile communications expansion. We must continue to drive infrastructure expansion forward. Deutsche Telekom is the leader in Germany when it comes to expanding networks. We do not talk. We build.’
