Globe President and CEO Ernest Cu says his company will launch commercial fifth-generation wireless services in the Philippines by the middle of 2019, promising speeds of between 50Mbps and 100Mbps. With demand for video streaming proving to be the key driver for its plan, Mr Cu confirmed Globe’s plan to commercialise 5G in Q2 2019, pending the finalisation of 5G standards by the GSM Association, which the latter plans to release by 2019. ‘People are watching more and more video. As video traffic goes up, we have to deliver higher speeds, not only to one screen but multiple screens in a household,’ Cu is quoted as saying. Globe is rolling out 5G with support from its partners, chiefly China’s Huawei Technologies.
