Hong Kong opens up 5GHz band

6 Jun 2018

Hong Kong’s Communications Authority (CA) is to open up 580MHz of spectrum in the 5GHz band for licensed assisted access (LAA) public mobile services. Mobile network operators (MNOs) in Hong Kong currently utilise a total of 552MHz between them in the sub-3GHz bands, so the move represents a ‘significant addition’ to the available spectrum, the regulator says.

A CA spokesperson stated: ‘With immediate effect, MNOs may apply to the CA for the use of the concerned band on a shared basis to provide public mobile services through necessary amendments to their unified carrier licences. Mobile users will stand to benefit from the increased service quality and capacity to be provided by MNOs through the use of the 5GHz shared band.’
