Uganda pushing for telco share sales

5 Jun 2018

The Ugandan government wants all of the country’s telecoms operators to list their shares on the Uganda Securities Exchange (USE) in Kampala. A report from The Daily Monitor says that Finance Minister Matia Kasaija has published a policy paper calling for all telcos and other major private companies to offer shares to local investors. President Museveni proposed a similar plan in 2013 but the government has so far failed to implement the appropriate legislation. None of Uganda’s telcos are currently listed, with the market playing host to international telecoms groups such as MTN of South Africa and India’s Bharti Airtel.
