Rostelecom and Ericsson have launched a 5G trial network at the State Hermitage Museum in St. Petersburg, Russia. The partners deployed a 5G trial zone, using the 3500MHz band, and demonstrated two new 5G use cases using a mix of virtual reality, haptic technology (a.k.a. kinesthetic communication – recreating the sense of touch by applying forces, vibrations or motions to the user), and robotics.
In one case, an object of art was restored with the help of a remote-controlled robotic arm, enabled by the high bit rate, low-latency characteristics of the 5G network.
In another use case, the partners demonstrated the possibilities of 5G for remote learning. As part of this, an art master used a remote-controlled robotic arm to show students precision techniques for restoring works of art.
