ATC to acquire Telkom Kenya towers

10 May 2018

Full-service provider Telkom Kenya and American Tower Corporation (ATC) have signed a sale-and-leaseback deal under which ATC will acquire up to 723 of the operator’s mobile towers for an undisclosed price. The deal is expected to close in the second half of 2018, subject to regulatory approvals. Telkom’s Board Chair Eddy Njoroge explained that the agreement would allow Telkom to improve its network and service, as the company looks to ‘transform … into a business with a reputation for excellence in terms of the quality and reliability of its network.’

CEO Aldo Mareuse, meanwhile, added that the sale would free up funds for investment elsewhere: ‘Telkom will now focus on its core function – the provision of quality telecommunications services to our customers. In addition, the sale will release capital for further investment in our 4G network and a number of state-of-the-art IT platforms, all of which will further enhance services for our customers as they demand higher quality and speed from our mobile data networks as well as a richer range of services.’
