Claro Colombia launches LTE-A in 199 municipalities

Claro has activated LTE-A technology in 199 Colombia municipalities, including 24 of the country’s 32 department capitals. The network comprises a total of 1,700 LTE-A cell sites, with the densest coverage reserved for Bogota, (415 cell sites), Medellin (160), Cali (131), Barranquilla (85) and Cartagena (83). Other cities covered include the likes of Monteria, Valledupar, Yopal, Santa Marta, Envigado, Bello, Florencia, Sincelejo, Duitama, Sogamoso, Girardot, Melgar, Piedecuesta, Villa de Leyva, Soacha, Anapoima, Mocoa and Buenaventura. Users with compatible handsets can expect to experience downlink transmission speeds of up to 286Mbps.

As previously reported by TeleGeography’s CommsUpdate, Tigo Une claimed Colombia’s first commercial LTE-A launch late last month, activating the service in selected parts of Bogota. Within a matter of days, Movistar had launched its own rival platform in 129 municipalities.
