MTN plans to remain in South Sudan despite challenges

1 May 2018

MTN South Sudan, the local mobile unit of South African telecoms firm MTN Group, plans to expand and improve its operations in the country, despite facing significant economic and security challenges. The EastAfrican quotes the cellco’s head of corporate services, Khumbulani Dhlomo, as saying that the shutdown of market leader Vivacell in March has led to an unplanned surge in demand for MTN’s services, resulting in network capacity restraints. Mr Dhlomo added that plans to install around 40 mobile towers across the country were halted due to the ongoing conflict, stating: ‘Our ability to quickly expand the network is going to be a challenge to us, but we will remain put and improve our services’.
