NTT DOCOMO reports increases in full-year revenues, EBITDA and net income

Japanese mobile provider NTT DOCOMO today reported that net income attributable to the company for the year ended 31 March 2018 rose to JPY744.5 billion (USD6.81 billion) from JPY652.5 billion in FY2016/17, as operating revenues increased 4% year-on-year to JPY4.769 trillion, operating income climbed 3% to JPY973.3 billion and EBITDA rose 3.2% to JPY1.509 trillion. Capital expenditure for the year was JPY576.4 billion, down 3.5% on an annualised basis. Broken down by segment, DOCOMO said its telecommunications business generated operating income of JPY832.8 billion (unchanged) on revenue of JPY3.898 trillion (10.5%), Smart life business contributed income of JPY62.9 billion (up 8.6% y-o-y) despite operating revenue slumping to JPY466.7 billion, and ‘other businesses’ accounted for JPY77.6 billion of operating income (43.6%) and JPY436.5 billion in revenue (+9.0%). Operating costs, however, edged up to JPY3.796 trillion in FY2017/18, from JPY3.640 trillion previously.

Operationally speaking, at end-March 2018 NTT DOCOMO, a subsidiary of NTT Corp, had a total of 76.363 million cellular subscribers, up nearly 2% from 74.880 million a year before, of which 50.097 million were 4G (branded Xi), up from 44.544 million at end-March 2017, and 26.265 million were 3G (FOMA), down a net 4.071 million year-on-year. Monthly blended ARPU increased to JPY4,690 from JPY4,430 and minutes of use (MOU) edged down to 136 minutes from 137 previously. In addition, the carrier reported that its fibre broadband service, docomo Hikari, had 4.762 million subscribers compared to 3.404 million at 31 March 2017.
