Poland’s Play eyes fixed broadband market

Polish mobile operator P4, which trades under the brand name Play, is looking to gain a foothold in the country’s fixed broadband market. A report from RPKom says that the cellco is creating a joint venture with Easyhost, a company controlled by Macquarie Group, which also owns Poznan-based ISP INEA. The venture – dubbed Fibee IV – will be active in the provision of wholesale access to fixed line networks, according to documents filed with Poland’s Office of Competition and Consumer Protection (Urzad Ochrony Konkurencji i Konsumentow, UOKiK). TeleGeography’s GlobalComms Database notes that Play is the second largest cellco in Poland in subscriber terms, behind fixed and mobile operator Orange.
