Airtel, Telkom Kenya seek merger to challenge Safaricom?

11 Apr 2018

Telkom Kenya and Bharti Airtel’s local mobile unit Airtel are reportedly planning to share infrastructure and outlets ahead of a potential acquisition of Airtel by Telkom. Reuters cites a source from the Communications Authority of Kenya (CA) as saying that the pair have yet to make a former application to the regulator disclosing the details of the potential deal. The move would create a stronger challenger to market leader Safaricom, which accounted for almost 75% of Kenya’s mobile subscribers at the end of 2017, compared to Airtel with a 15.4% share and Telkom with 9.8%.
