Bahrain Telecommunications Company (Batelco) has signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with Chinese vendor Huawei to work together on the Bahrain National Broadband Network (NBN). The MoU, which was signed at the Mobile World Congress 2018, aims to assist the Bahrain government with its Fourth National Telecommunications Plan, which targets 100% access to reliable, ultra-fast broadband by 2019 for all businesses, as well as 95% for residential households by the same date. Under the terms of their agreement, Batelco and Huawei will collaborate to promote the development of the NBN in Bahrain. The MoU also covers the pair’s development of ‘Safe Cities’ in the Kingdom, in order to enhance safety and living standards in urban areas.
Shaikh Mohamed Bin Khalifa Alkhalifa, chairman of Batelco, said: ‘Batelco is delighted to partner with Huawei to explore how ICT can be deployed to enhance the safety and overall environment of the Kingdom. We strive to assist our government in promoting the growth of a robust National Broadband Network and nurturing a secure atmosphere that will empower the Bahraini people to live fearlessly to their full potential.’
