Maltese telco Melita has selected Ericsson to act as its strategic partner for future 5G mobile services. The vendor has landed a contract to modernise and expand Melita’s network in preparation for 5G, deploying its Ericsson Radio System (ERS) and upgrading the virtual Evolved Packet Core (vEPC) deployed on Ericsson cloud infrastructure. Simon Montanaro, Chief Technology Officer at Melita, said: ‘We are committed to providing the residents and businesses of Malta with the best possible mobile connectivity. Our strategic goal is to stay at the forefront of customer experience.’
According to TeleGeography’s GlobalComms Database, Melita is the smallest of Malta’s three cellular operators, behind Vodafone and GO. While its rivals have been offering 4G LTE cellular services for some years, Melita is still relying on 3G technology for its own mobile data services.
