Verizon requests 3.5GHz spectrum trial in Florida

23 Mar 2018

Verizon Wireless has requested permission from the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) to conduct trials using 3.5GHz Citizens Broadband Radio Service (CBRS) spectrum in two Florida locations. In the Special Temporary Authority (STA) application – as uncovered by Fierce Wireless – the US mobile market leader noted that it is working with multiple base station and mobile device equipment vendors to conduct product testing in indoor and outdoor locations in the cities of Boca Raton and Fort Lauderdale. Verizon’s targeted start date is 2 April 2018, with the trial expected to run until 28 September 2018.

TeleGeography notes that a number of US operators have requested permission to trial 3.5GHz spectrum in recent months as they begin plotting a path towards 5G mobile technology. T-Mobile US has requested multiple trials, most recently in Las Vegas earlier this month, while other interested parties include the likes of US Cellular and cable duo Charter Communications and Comcast.
