Mauricio Ramos, the CEO of Millicom International Cellular (MIC), has confirmed that the company intends to invest USD150 million in its Tigo Bolivia unit during 2018. In an interview with local publication El Deber, the executive noted that the investment will be used to support the expansion of its 4G LTE and HFC cable networks as it seeks to bridge the digital divide. Ramos said that the HFC network, which currently passes 500,000 homes will be extended to pass 800,000 homes by year-end, and added that the operator currently boasts 60% LTE population coverage. With reference to the growing middle-class population and the data-hungry youth demographic, Ramos concluded by noting: ‘Building networks today to fill them in five to ten years is long term [thinking] … We are in Bolivia for the long term.’
