Rostelecom launches 5G open pilot zone

23 Mar 2018

Rostelecom, Nokia and the Skolkovo Foundation have launched Russia’s ‘first open pilot zone’ based on 5G mobile network standards. The pilot is based on Nokia equipment located at the Skolkovo Innovation Centre, and companies and research teams are invited to jointly test equipment and solutions at the site. The pilot 5G operations are based on 3.5GHz frequencies (previously issued to Rostelecom’s FreshTel subsidiary), whilst at the opening of the pilot network MegaFon provided its LTE 1800MHz spectrum to demonstrate aggregation with Rostelecom’s 3.5GHz band, under the two operators’ agreement on joint 5G research, signed in autumn 2017.
