Uganda cracks down on illegal SIMs

The government of Uganda has ordered the country’s telecoms regulator, the Uganda Communications Commission (UCC), to investigate the continued use of illegal unregistered mobile SIM cards, The Independent reports. Minister of ICT Frank Tumwebaze commented: ‘All telecom operators are on notice, if they don’t switch off illegally acquired SIM cards they will be penalised, and/or have their licences revoked. Cabinet has taken this position and we will enforce it without exception.’ Under current legislation, all operators are required to register customer details using national ID cards to prevent cell phones from being used for criminal activity.
